God is Love

Week Starting June 27, 2021

Read this Scripture:

Romans 5:8 - God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!

Read this Thought:
This is our last devotion in our 'God is...' series (it’s okay if you want to make a sad ‘awwwww…” sound). The good news is that we have saved an absolutely beautiful truth for last.  We get to talk about the reality that God is love.

Love is a word that we hear from a young age. It also is used in many ways. We can say that we love pizza, but we can also tell our mom that we love her in a deep and meaningful way. Sadly, by using the word love so often we make it not as meaningful as it could or should be.

When we say that God is love, we are using the word love in the most beautiful and deep way. Jesus said in John 15:13, “No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.” True love is more than a feeling, it is sacrificial. Jesus showed us the ultimate example of love by first humbling Himself and coming to our world. He confirmed His love by dying for us. Romans 5:8 states that, “God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!”

If you want to know what the true definition of love is, look at Jesus. If you want to know what it means that God is love, look at Jesus. In Jesus we have the fullness of love shown to us.

Do this Activity:
Take a few moments to prepare this activity… Get three pieces of paper (they can be small). On each one draw a heart and write these verses:

  • John 3:16 - For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only  Son,  so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.

  • 1 John 3:1 - Look at how great a love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children. And we are!

  • 1 John 3:16 - This is how we have come to know love: He laid down His life for us.

Hide these notes and send everyone on a treasure hunt. As you find each note, read it together.

Discuss this Question:
If God has given us His love, what are we called to do with His love?

Scripture to Memorise:

Deuteronomy 6:4–5

[4] Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. [5] You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (ESV)
